STRANGE NATURE is an Eco-Thriller feature film based on true unsolved outbreaks of wildlife mutations.
In 1995, hideously deformed frogs began popping up in Minnesota ponds. Over the next few years, thousands were discovered. Some frog populations were as much as 70% deformed. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency came up with many possible theories for the cause but nothing definite. It was only known as something in the water. In 2001, the U.S. Government pulled all further research funding. The malformations spread to other states and even other countries such as most recently, India and China.
The problem continues…
These true events are the basis for the feature film, STRANGE NATURE. It is a horror film and a drama of sorts. The horror of a small Minnesota town struck with this phenomenon as it moves beyond the ponds. The drama and hope of a single mother and her 11-year old son as they fight to rebuild their lives as the threat of the birth defects and other damaging effects draws nearer.
We believe this is a very timely and important film to be made, involving an environmental issue that has been swept under the carpet for far too long. Though fantastic, STRANGE NATURE does point out the horrifying possibilities of letting something like this go by the wayside.
Recently, we’ve been in close contact with some of the leading U.S. Ecological scientists involved in the deformed frog cases. They truly feel let down by the government as well as the media for not taking this matter more seriously. Therefore, they are in full support of the STRANGE NATURE project to the extent that they will actually provide us with real live severely deformed frog specimens to use in the film.
A major reason for Jim Ojala to helm such a project is his professional background as a special makeup/creature effects artist for the last 13 years. After working on several television series, over 80 feature films and numerous commercials Jim has built up the knowledge, skills and the qualified team to easily and cost effectively oversee the intensive makeup and creature effects in the film on a tight timeline and budget.
These are a few of the things we have managed to achieve for the production so far:
-An entire nightmare sequence from the script has already been shot, edited, scored and completed.
-All winter exteriors in Minnesota have already been shot.
-All live mutated frog footage has been shot. Live severely deformed frogs were supplied to us by one of the leading U.S. ecologists involved in the mysterious cases of widespread frog deformities.
-For the news “broadcast” footage needed for the film, we have already shot all of the footage at a Duluth news station using real newscasters (release forms signed) using the station’s news cameras.
-70% of all makeup/creature fx already completed for the film by myself and other industry professionals.
-70% of all shooting locations for the film in MN are already secured at little to no cost.
-Numerous leading U.S. Ecological scientists supporting the film as it relates to their efforts of finding this mystery water mutation cause. One scientist has already supplied us with severely malformed frogs to exhibit in the film.
-Hit song by the film’s protagonist, Kim Sweet, “Sweeter Than Kandy” already created.
